Help! My Teeth are Yellow

Help! My Teeth are Yellow

If you have yellow teeth, you may feel less than confident about your smile. It’s hard to want to display your smile if you feel like your pearly whites are a duller, less attractive shade of yellow instead. But rather than covering up your teeth, why not look for ways that you can make your teeth whiter?

You have many options for making your teeth whiter, ranging from as low-tech as changing what you eat to as comprehensive as getting veneers. In this blog, Dr. Anette Betancor of Dente Complete Dentistry explains more about how you can take your teeth from yellow to dazzling white.

The first step

The first step you can do is get a dental cleaning and avoid habits that may stain your teeth. Some bad habits that can stain your teeth include:

Then, you’ll want to use whitening toothpaste. This may help your teeth look a little brighter.

You can also try using whitening strips, which are available over-the-counter. They have to be worn for 20 minutes a day for about two weeks. However, they can usually only whiten your teeth by a couple of shades.

Professional teeth whitening

If you want to go whiter than what you can achieve with over-the-counter products, you may want to try professional teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening produces much better results than you can get from whitening strips.

You can opt for whitening trays that you take home, which are filled with a gel with various bleach concentrations. You’ll wear the trays each day as directed by your dentist. The dentist will also tell you how to place the gel in the tray and make sure it fits well against your teeth to minimize contact with your gums.

Another option for teeth whitening is to have it done in the dentist’s office. The dentist will shield your gums and then place the whitening gel on your teeth. She will then “cure” the gel on your teeth with a special laser, which produces results much more quickly–often in as little as one session.

Dental veneers

If you want to go even whiter than what professional teeth whitening can accomplish, you have another option: dental veneers. With dental veneers, the sky’s the limit with how white you can go. If you’ve ever seen TV newscasters and wondered how they got their teeth so white, chances are good that they got veneers.

If your dentin (the hard bony tissue inside your teeth) is naturally darker, regular whitening treatments won’t affect your teeth. Similarly, if you want to go many shades whiter than your natural tooth color, veneers are the only way to get the dazzling Hollywood white shade you want.

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are placed over your natural teeth. However, because we have to file down your natural teeth to make room for the shells, they should be considered a permanent solution. Most veneers last for about ten years on average before you need to replace them.

If you’re self-conscious about the color of your teeth, you don’t have to be anymore. There’s so much you can do to make your teeth whiter. Contact Dr. Anette Betancor at Dente Complete Dentistry or make an appointment online.
